At annual meetings and during the years, committees are a way of building networks and
exchanging information and professional expertise.
Members are encouraged to participate and join committees, without which CBHL would not be as
strong and enriching.

Annual Award for a Significant Work in Botanical or Horticultural Literature Committee
Chair: Gretchen Wade, Harvard University.
Since 2000, CBHL is giving an annual award to both the author and publisher of
a work that makes a significant contribution to the literature of botany or horticulture.
The award is presented at the Annual Meeting. Its purpose is to recognize a work that makes a
significant contribution to the literature of botany or horticulture, increase the visibility of
CBHL, and encourage participation by the CBHL community in recognizing significant contributions
to the literature of the field.

Audit Committee
An audit of the records of the CBHL treasury is conducted each year by this committee. Records
maintained by the Treasurer are submitted for examination.
A report is made to the Board and subsequently to the membership at the Annual Meeting, and
a summary is published in the Newsletter.

Charles Robert Long Award Committee
The Charles Robert Long Award Committee members are past presidents of CBHL, appointed on staggered terms by
the current president as new openings are available. The committee chooses award recipients
who have shown outstanding dedication to CBHL and have made major contributions in the field
of botanical or horticultural literature and information service and research.

Electronic Communications Committee
This committee exists to aid and encourage the electronic sharing of information among CBHL members.
Current activities include an active CBHL online distribution list and a website. The distribution
list promotes information sharing, and all CBHL members are encouraged to participate. The list
is not open to nonmembers, although nonmembers may ask members to post announcements or queries.
The website is available to all and exists both to serve CBHL members and to promote CBHL and
its goals.

Founders' Fund Travel Fellowship Award Committee
The Travel Fellowship was established in 1991 by CBHL with an initial grant from Virginia Gardner,
of VLT Gardner Botanical Books. It was created as a memorial honoring past members.
Income from memorial gifts is granted to four applicants each year who request assistance
to attend the annual meeting. Persons interested in contributing memorial or other donations
to the fund may contact the CBHL treasurer.

Membership Committee
This committee was formed to explore ways to monitor and enhance CBHL's membership campaign, and
to welcome new members. The committee is considering the development of an information packet,
as well as other ways to orient new members.

Nominating Committee
The chair is the immediate past president of CBHL, and at least two
additional members are appointed by the president. The committee selects
nominee(s) for 2nd Vice-president of CBHL, or any other officer position
needing to be filled, for election by members' mail ballot before the
Annual Meeting. The person elected as 2nd Vice-President makes a commitment
to serve on the Board of Directors for four years, as 2nd Vice-President,
1st Vice-President, President and, finally, Past President. Other positions
on the Board are also filled by election as needed. Election is held
annually.

Preservation and Access Committee
This committee (formerly named (1) the Documentation Strategy Committee and then (2) the
Resources Assessment for Preservation and Access Committee -RAPAC) is developing projects to
identify botanical and horticultural collections and information resources that should be
preserved for the future. Current activities include a CBHL member survey on non-book holdings
in member libraries. A symposium was also held on preservation at the XVI International
Botanical Congress in August 1999.

Publications Committee
A membership recruitment brochure, the membership directory, and a quarterly newsletter are the
CBHL publications currently managed by this committee. The 2nd Vice-President provides guidance
to the committee and functions as the liaison between the committee and the Board.

Public Relations Committee
This committee was formed to explore ways to promote CBHL and CBHL member libraries and
organizations, both within member organizations and to the world at large.

Resource Sharing Committee
This is a new committee, formed from the Computer Consortium Committee. Its charge is to identify and facilitate ways to exchange resources.

Steering Committee
This committee was formed at the Albuquerque meeting in 1999, under the name of Committee on Committees, in order to facilitate intercommittee
communication. A current charge is to provide input on committee structure and operations to the
Strategic Planning Committee. Its members are the chairs of all CBHL committees, plus the
newsletter editor, membership manager, webmaster, and the Board.
