Sir Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker: traveller and plant collector
by Ray Desmond
(Antique Collectors' Club with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, 1999)
286 pages
ISBN 1851493050

July 18, 2001 - Denver, CO -- The Council on Botanical and Horticultural Libraries, Inc. (CBHL) presented its second Annual Literature Award to Ray Desmond, author of Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker: Traveller and Plant Collector, and the Antique Collector's Club, the book's publisher, on July 11, 2001. The presentation was made during the Council's annual meeting at the Denver Botanic Gardens. The award was created to recognize significant contributions to the literature of botany or horticulture.

Desmond's excellent study introduces us to Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker, the eminent Victorian botanist, plant collector and explorer, botanical artist, collaborator of Charles Darwin, and scientist. Combining Hooker's own letters and drawings, this well researched work presents one of the great histories of plant collection and exploration. The book met or exceeded all criteria for the Literature Award, including excellence of intellectual content, usefulness, and uniqueness.

The Council on Botanical and Horticultural Libraries, Inc. is the leading professional organization in the field of botanical and horticultural information services. It recognizes the critical importance of collecting, preserving, and making accessible the accumulated knowledge about plants for present and future generations.
