July 18, 2001 - Denver, CO -- The Council on Botanical and Horticultural Libraries, Inc. (CBHL)
presented an Honorable Mention Award to Ronald M. Lanner, author of Conifers of California, and
Cachuma Press, the book's publisher, on July 11, 2001. This presentation was made during the Council's
annual meeting at the Denver Botanic Gardens. The award was created to recognize significant
contributions to the literature of botany or horticulture.
Featuring all 52 species of native California conifers, Lanner's lucid prose is combined with exceptional
photographs, watercolor botanical illustrations, and distribution maps. The text provides each plant's
description, distribution, habitat, identification (at a distance, standing beneath it, and in the hand), plant
lore, ethnobotany and economic uses. This is the first year that an author and publisher have been
presented with an Honorable Mention Award by the Council. The book met or exceeded all criteria for
the Honorable Mention Award, including excellence of intellectual content, usefulness, and uniqueness.
The Council on Botanical and Horticultural Libraries, Inc. is the leading professional organization in the
field of botanical and horticultural information services. It recognizes the critical importance of collecting,
preserving, and making accessible the accumulated knowledge about plants for present and future
generations.
