April 22, 2002 - SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- The Council on Botanical and Horticultural Libraries, Inc. (CBHL)
presented its third Annual Literature Award on April 10, 2002. This presentation was made
during the Council's annual meeting at Strybing Arboretum and Botanical Gardens and The California
Academy of Sciences.
The Annual Literature Award, created to recognize significant contributions to the literature
of botany and horticulture, lauded two exceptional books this year. The CBHL selection
committee honored both of these books for excellence of intellectual content, usefulness to
the intended audience and distinguished contribution to the literature.
Combining aesthetically brilliant photographs with superb keys, Lichens of North America by Irwin M.
Brodo, Sylvia Duran Sharnoff and Stephen Sharnoff, along with publisher Yale University Press,
received this year's Annual Literature Award in the Technical category. This monumental work
dramatically expands both botanical knowledge and casual appreciation of this unique form of plant life.
