April 22, 2002 - SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- The Council on Botanical and Horticultural Libraries, Inc. (CBHL) presented its third Annual Literature Award on April 10, 2002. This presentation was made during the Council's annual meeting at Strybing Arboretum and Botanical Gardens and The California Academy of Sciences.

The Annual Literature Award, created to recognize significant contributions to the literature of botany and horticulture, lauded two exceptional books this year. The CBHL selection committee honored both of these books for excellence of intellectual content, usefulness to the intended audience and distinguished contribution to the literature.

Combining aesthetically brilliant photographs with superb keys, Lichens of North America by Irwin M. Brodo, Sylvia Duran Sharnoff and Stephen Sharnoff, along with publisher Yale University Press, received this year's Annual Literature Award in the Technical category. This monumental work dramatically expands both botanical knowledge and casual appreciation of this unique form of plant life. An authoritative guidebook to the lichens of the North American continent, the authors feature 805 lichens accompanied by over 900 color photos and many line drawings. Additional information about the authors' work and research can be found at http://www.lichen.com/.

Winner in the General Interest category is Bamboo for Gardens by Ted Jordan Meredith, published by Timber Press. Meredith's thorough exploration of the taxonomy, morphology and physiology of bamboos is coupled with encyclopedic descriptions of over 300 bamboos from 40 genera. Home gardeners will find his superb color photographs, clear line drawings and cultural information eminently helpful.

The Council on Botanical and Horticultural Libraries, Inc. is the leading professional organization in the field of botanical and horticultural information services. It recognizes the critical importance of collecting, preserving, and making accessible the accumulated knowledge about plants for present and future generations.
