MORE ABOUT THE HOST INSTITUTION
Comprised of 125 acres of natural wetlands, woodlands, meadows and botanical gardens, Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park is a year round experience with indoor tropical, arid, Carnivorous, Victorian and seasonal gardens, world class changing sculpture gallery with shows by international artists, and outdoor acreage featuring a world-class sculpture park, children's garden, historic Michigan's farm garden, amphitheater for summer concert events, nature trails and boardwalks.
The integration of horticulture and sculpture flows throughout the site, uniquely blending both art and nature, setting it apart from other more traditional botanic gardens or art museum experiences. Described as "a national treasure" by President Jimmy Carter, Frederik Meijer Gardens has grown to become an international destination in a short span of time. Distinguished by sculptures from well-known artists such as Rodin, Moore, Oldenberg, DiSuvero, and many others, the sculpture representation is significant to the Midwest region on equal terms with other well known arts institutions in the world.

POST-CONFERENCE TOURS
June 7, 2008
-
P.J. Hoffmaster State Park, Lake Michigan Dune Ecosystem Tour
Guided tour from one of the park rangers at the
Gillette Sand Dune Visitor Center.
The Great Lakes dunes make up the most extensive freshwater dunes in the world, so vast they are visible from outer space. Michigan contains more of these dunes, with their great number of endemic species, than any other Great Lakes state. Come explore this unique ecosystem with us as we hike the wooded back dunes and out to the shores of Lake Michigan with one of the park's informative rangers. This is a unique opportunity to see the second largest of the Great Lakes and its unique dune ecosystem.
- Michigan State University
Beal Botanical Gardens and
Horticulture Demonstration Gardens
Established in 1873, the Beal Botanical Garden is the oldest continuously operated university botanical garden of its kind in the United States. Come on a guided tour with us as we explore the many different collections that can be found at Beal. These beautiful and interesting collections include the economic plant collection, the forest communities collection, the plant families collection and more.
After lunch we will travel across the Michigan State University campus to the Horticultural Demonstration Gardens where our tour guide will lead us through the perennial gardens, the 4-H Children's Garden, the rose garden and others. There will be time after our tours to explore the Clarence E. Lewis Landscape Arboretum on your own or find a fun gift at the gift shop or just relax among the plants. This should be a fun-filled day of plant exploration on the campus of Michigan State University. |
